STARSS Greenwich
Stronger Together for an Ambitious Resilient SEND System
Why we’re here
Children and young people with SEND have shared their ambitions for Greenwich to be an inclusive, collaborative community where every child and young person can flourish, succeed, and reach their full potential. Our SEND Strategy sets the scene for delivering on those ambitions, and this programme has been set up to ensure young people are supported with the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to navigate their future with success.
Through our work with Newton last year, listening to children and young people, teachers and families, we know that finding the right support can feel complex, experiences vary across schools, and plans and reviews often take too long to make a difference. As part of building a sustainable SEND system together, we are now using what we’ve heard to co-design the changes that will improve experiences and outcomes for children and young people.
What to expect over the next few months?
Some of you may remember the work we did with Newton last year where we surveyed schools and ran workshops to understand what would make a difference in how we support children and young people. You told us that consistency across the borough, a wider range of training and a strong peer network were all key in your ability to do this however there is a lot of content out there, it’s not tailored to you and you have less time than ever before to find the right support and training that’s right for you given your strengths, your children and your staff.
That’s why we’ve invested in a programme with Newton and Whole Education that will be starting in the coming weeks. Some of you may have heard of Whole Education or worked with them before – they’ve been working with schools for the past 15 years with a demonstratable track record of improving outcomes for children. They will work with a cohort of schools over the next few months to help them understand their individual training needs before creating bespoke action plans and providing access to a wealth of resources and experts.
Please do reach out to Martyn martyn.patterson@royalgreenwich.gov.uk if you have any questions or would like to be involved in any of the wider work - we'll be running workshops over the coming months that people can get involved in and will keep everyone up-to-date on the progress we make.

We hope by working collaboratively in this way, we will most effectively support Greenwich pupils and ensure that we are providing equitable, safe and inclusive schools for them.
